Salt & Sovereignty
Privacy Policy
Last updated October 26, 2026
This policy explains what information the Salt & Sovereignty website (saltandsovereignty.com) and the Salt & Sovereignty app for iPhone, iPad and Android collect, why, and the choices you have. Salt & Sovereignty is run by Ashley P. Questions are always welcome at ashley.p@saltandsovereignty.com.
The short version
Your practice is yours. We keep what you write so it can follow you between the website and the app. We do not sell your information, show you ads, or use advertising trackers.
Using it without an account
You can use much of Salt & Sovereignty as a guest. Guest altars, grimoire pages, rituals and settings are kept only on your device or in your browser and are never sent to us. Clearing your browser data or deleting the app removes them.
Information you give us
- Your account. Your email address and a password (stored only in protected, scrambled form), or the identity Google or Apple shares when you choose “Continue with Google” or “Sign in with Apple”. If you use Sign in with Apple, you can choose to hide your email; Apple may share your name the first time you sign in.
- Your profile and settings. Optional details such as a preferred name, magical name and pronouns, and how you like the Sanctuary, Living Library and altar to look.
- Your practice. What you create while signed in: Book of Shadows pages, My Practice notes in the Living Library, altars and the objects on them, your own cabinet items and apothecary workings (including any photos you choose for them), rituals you plan or record, journal entries, readings, dreams, sigils and the notes you keep in the practice tools, and a birth chart if you make one (the birth date, time and place you enter). These are saved to your account so they sync between devices.
- Community offerings. Anything you submit to the Community Grimoire, Field Notes, and messages with us about a submission. Offerings are reviewed before anything is published. If you publish under a name, that name appears with it; if you choose Anonymous, we will not intentionally publish identifying information. The Submission Terms explain how published work is used.
- Covens. If you join the coven community you choose a name other witches see (it doesn't have to be your legal name), and optionally pronouns and a short note about your path; you also confirm that you are 18 or older. Other signed-in witches can see that profile. Inside a coven we keep the covens you found or join, your position, the agreements you sign (with the name you sign with and when), your applications and requests to advance, your messages in the coven's chat and in the one-to-one and group conversations you're part of, your petitions, what you place on its shared altars, and the coven rituals you plan or the steps you're given and finish. A coven's members can see its members, chat and altars; only the people in a conversation can read it; its reviewers see applications sent to it. The Salt & Sovereignty moderators can see every coven's pages, chat and altars in order to keep covens safe, but not private conversations unless a message from one is reported to them. If you report something, we keep your report and a copy of a reported message; the person you report isn't told who reported them. We also keep the list of people you've blocked, which only you can see.
- Emails you send us, including reports about community posts.
Information collected automatically
- Website visits. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. It does not use cookies or build a profile of you.
- App updates. The app checks Expo's update service for improvements, which receives basic technical details such as the app version and device platform.
- Service logs. Our hosting and database providers keep short-lived technical logs (such as IP addresses and error messages) to keep the service secure and working.
On your device, with your permission
- Calendar. If you allow it, the app adds your planned rituals, moon phases and sabbats to a calendar on your device. We don't read your other events, and calendar contents are not sent to us.
- Notifications. Moon, ritual and other reminders are scheduled on your device. If you allow notifications for coven messages, we keep your phone's notification address (an Expo push token) with your account, and when someone writes to you the sender's name and the start of the message are passed through Expo's push service and Apple or Google to show on your phone. You can turn these off for each coven, mute a conversation, or turn off notifications in your phone's settings.
- Location. If you choose to share your location, or type it in, the app uses it to work out sunrise, sunset, moonrise and planetary hours where you are. It is rounded to about a kilometre and kept on your device; it is never sent to us. To show the weather, the app and website send only those rounded coordinates, with nothing about you, to Open-Meteo, a free weather service; tide times come from NOAA for the station you choose. You can forget your location at any time on the Sky screen.
- Photos. When you add a picture of your own (for an altar item, an apothecary working, or the cards of your own oracle deck), the app reads only the photo you choose. Signed in, it is stored with your account so it appears on the website too, at a long, unguessable web address that isn't listed anywhere; as a guest it stays on your device.
- Files. Backups you make are saved where you choose, and restores read only the file you pick.
How we use it
To run your account and keep your practice in sync; to review, publish and reply to community offerings; to run covens and keep them safe; to answer you when you write to us; to keep the service secure; and to understand, in aggregate, which parts of Salt & Sovereignty are useful. We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Who helps us run it
We rely on a few service providers, who handle information only to provide their service to us: Supabase (accounts and database), Netlify and Cloudflare (website hosting, delivery and analytics), Expo (app builds, updates and delivering phone notifications), Open-Meteo and NOAA (weather and tides, as above), Google and Apple (only if you choose to sign in with them), and Apple's App Store and Google Play (app distribution and purchases). The website also loads fonts from Google Fonts and the podcast player from RSS.com, which receive your browser's request when those parts of a page load.
We may share information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of people using Salt & Sovereignty.
Keeping and deleting your information
We keep your account information until you delete your account. You can delete it yourself in the app (More → Account) or ask us to delete it (see Delete your account). Deleting your account removes your account, settings, practice, private drafts and unpublished submissions, and your coven profile, memberships, signatures, applications, petitions, the messages you wrote in coven chats and conversations, your blocks and your notification sign-ups. A coven you founded stays for its members, without you as its founder, and pages you published in a coven's book stay without your name. Reports kept for safety stay without your account. Work that was already published in the Community Grimoire stays only in anonymized form, with your name and account removed, as described in the Submission Terms.
You can download a backup of your Sanctuary at any time from the app or website.
Your choices and rights
You can view and change your information in the app or on the website, download a backup, and delete your account. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, such as asking for a copy of your data or asking us to correct or delete it. Email ashley.p@saltandsovereignty.com and we'll respond within 30 days.
Security
Information travels over encrypted connections, and the database only lets each person reach their own private information. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
Children
Salt & Sovereignty is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us and we'll delete it. Covens are only for adults 18 and older.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above, and for significant changes we'll let you know in the app or on the website.
